Jason Smith

Jason Smith, B.M in Jazz Performance from the University of South Florida, M.M. in Trombone Performance from the Cleveland Institute of Music. His principal teachers include Steve Witser, Tom Brantley, and John Drew.

While in Florida, Jason was very active as a jazz and classical trombonist. He recorded with Sam River’s Rivbea Orchestra and Dan McMillion’s Grammy nominated Groovin’ High Jazz Orchestra. He has performed at several European jazz festivals, including Montreux, Switzerland, Umbria, Italy, and Veinne, France. He also performed with the Tampa Bay Mostly Pops Orchestra, the Tampa Bay Master Chorale, and Walt Disney World’s Christmas Brass. In 2004, Jason was a finalist in the Larry Wiehe solo competition, sponsored by the International Trombone Association.

Upon moving to Cleveland he quickly established himself as one of the areas most versatile trombonists. He has performed with the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra, Opera Cleveland, Cleveland Pops Orchestra, Blossom Festival Band, and Erie Philharmonic. He was a gueast soloist with the Cleveland Chamber Winds, performing Jean Francaix's Concerto for trombone and winds. He has also performed in various shows at Cleveland’s Playhouse Square, Blossom's Porthouse Theater, and the Great Lakes Theater . Jason is a faculty member at Cleveland State University, teaching trombone and euphonium. He was appointed to the CIM faculty in 2011.
