Paul Cox
Paul Cox, Ph.D., teaches Symphonic Literature during the fall and spring semesters at CIM. An active scholar and percussionist, he is the director of the CWRU Percussion Ensemble and a visiting assistant professor at Oberlin College and Conservatory, where he teaches percussion and musicology. Dr. Cox earned a Ph.D. in 2011 from CWRU after completing his dissertation, Collaged Codes: John Cage’s Credo in US. He is currently working on a book project about Cage and his early collaborations with the choreographer Merce Cunningham. From 1996-2005, Dr. Cox worked as the assistant curator of Music and associate director of Performing Arts at the Cleveland Museum of Art, where he was also the co-director of the internationally acclaimed Aki Festival of New Music (three-time winner of the CMA/ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming). A graduate of the Oberlin Conservatory of Music (BM), Dr. Cox also studied percussion at Yale University’s Norfolk Festival, Aspen, the Royal College of Music (London) and Rice University. In the summer, he returns to his hometown of Sitka, Alaska to serve as director of Sitka Fest, a summer-long arts and culture festival.
