Steven Mark Kohn
Steven Mark Kohn, Electronic Music Production, received a Bachelor of Music degree in composition from Kent State University (magna cum laude) and a Master of Music degree in composition from The Cleveland Institute of Music. He completed further studies at the Aspen Music Festival (Composition) and the Banff Centre (Musical Theatre). He has created TV and radio commercial music for Wheaties, Arby's, Matrix, Volvo, BP, Hickory Farms, Rax Restaurants, Sentenel, Stanley Steemer, Kelly Tire, TRW and many others and has composed scores for award-winning animated children’s films for PBS, ABC and the Disney Channel including Frog and Toad Together, Uncle Elephant, Cousin Kevin, Commander Toad in Space, Morris goes to School, Ralph S. Mouse and the Emmy-nominated Runaway Ralph starring Fred Savage and Ray Walston. He has written and arranged music for KFI Radio Los Angeles, Sea World, Harper Collins Audio Books, Second Story Productions, The Sylvia Rimm Show (NPR) and the documentary film Let Them Live for BBC 2, London. Other works include Health Journeys, a 45-volume Time-Warner audio book series; Hymn for String Orchestra, (pub. by Carl Fischer) which was recorded by the San Jose Chamber Orchestra; and many art songs (pub by Classical Vocal Repertoire). His three volumes of American folk song arrangements (under the title American Folk Set) were premiered at Carnegie Hall by David Daniels and Martin Katz and have been performed all over the world by a number of artists. Andrew Garland and Donna Loewy recorded the entire collection for Azica Records in 2008.
Mr. Kohn is also a writer and lyricist and has written lyrics for the stage musicals The Quiltmaker’s Gift (Dramatic Publishing) Unstoppable Me, The Tale of the Nutcracker, and the stage show The Three Redneck Tenors, all to the music of Craig Bohmler. His screenplay for the television pilot Little Mozart was produced by OhLook! Productions in Dallas, and he has co-written and directed the short films Bugfeast, Lord J’s Wild West Daredevil Show and How’s My Driving?, which have been screened at festivals around the country and in Europe. His short story The Professor’s Diary appeared in National Lampoon magazine. Mr. Kohn was appointed to the CIM faculty in 1998.
