Peter D'Antonio

Adjunct Professor, Audio Recording, received a Bachelor of Science degree from St. John's University and a Ph.D. from Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn. He designed and built Underground Sound Recording studio in Largo, Maryland in 1974, developed the reflection phase grating (RPG) diffusor and pioneered the development of the reflection-free zone (RFZ) concept. He founded RPG Diffusor Systems, Inc. in 1983, and is president of the company that carries out basic research in room acoustics, develops innovative architectural acoustic design components for critical listening and performance environments. Dr. D'Antonio designs diffusor systems used in more than 1000 recording, broadcast, performing and residential listening applications throughout the world. He holds trademarks and patents for a wide range of number-theoretic and fractal devices, and has published numerous scientific articles in technical journals and magazines. He is the co-author, with Dr. Trevor J. Cox, of Acoustical Sound Absorbers and Diffusors: Theory, Design and Application. Current research includes surface shape optimization, performance acoustics and diffusion and scattering coefficient measurement methodology. Dr. D'Antonio is a member of AES and ISO committees creating the Scattering and Diffusion Coefficient Measurement Methodology Standards, a fellow of the Acoustical Society of America and the Audio Engineering Society, and a professional affiliate of the American Institute of Architects. He was appointed to the CIM faculty in 1991.
