Director of Major Gifts

Reporting to the Vice President of Institutional Advancement, the Director of Major Gifts (DMG) is responsible for the development and overall management of the major gifts program for the Cleveland Institute of Music, including cultivating and managing relationships and securing support from donors who are capable of making gifts of $50,000 and higher.

This individual will create and implement a plan for major gift fundraising in Cleveland, nationally and globally including preparing for the next fundraising campaign to be completed in celebration of CIM's Centennial in 2020.

The DMG will manage a personal portfolio of 100-150 prospects as well as any major gift officers added to the team and administrative projects.

This individual will work closely with CIM leadership, Board of Trustees, faculty and staff to promote the acquisition of major gifts. This individual will also work closely with the Development team to ensure coordination amongst all giving programs.

The DMG discusses assets proficiently and listens for opportunities for gifts of assets or other non-cash gifts, such as planned gifts; provides opportunity for donors to receive recognition and increase future giving opportunity; and understands and complies with all gift-related policies and procedures and ensures ethical compliance, as defined by the Association for Fundraising Professionals.

The ideal candidate will be an individual with a rich development background, who has had progressive and successful development experience in major gifts, has a strong track record of successful people management. Experience in one or both higher education and musical arts is preferred.


  • Meet budget goals and performance measures for the major gifts program.
  • Work closely with the President, VP for Institutional Advancement, trustees, development team, and faculty as appropriate to develop prospect strategies, cultivate relationships, carry out solicitations, and stewardship to foster sustaining relationships with CIM:
    • Develop increasing levels of involvement and support among donors, prospects, and contacts through regular correspondence alone and in conjunction with the President, Board of Trustees, and other volunteers and staff; with personal targets for actions and meetings per year;
    • Oversee the research, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of all restricted, major and planned gifts to CIM including detailed profiles on prospective major donors and volunteers;
    • Oversee a cultivation tracking system for all major and planned gift donors and prospects; ensure the integrity of the donor and prospect files and database as they relate to major gifts; produce contact reports; track and regularly report on donor contact activity in Raiser's Edge database;
    • Oversee and coordinate communication with assigned prospects including stewardship (acknowledgements, recognition, reporting, etc.).
  • Directly manage a portfolio of 100 to 150 prospects, with roughly the following distribution per giving area (with some overlap between them):
    • Major Gifts (and Campaign): 70%
    • Planned giving: 20%
    • Annual Fund: 10%
  • In close communication with the VP for Institutional Advancement, provide leadership to the overall planning and execution of campaigns and other major gift fundraising efforts:
    • Serve as a key member of the campaign planning team, working closely with volunteer leadership and counsel on campaign and donor strategy;
    • Oversee all marketing of the planned giving program.
  • Develop, write, and coordinate production of major gift fundraising materials including case statement, PowerPoint presentations, brochures and web content as needed:
    • Conceptualize and prepare proposals and budgets for specific requests and giving opportunities;
    • Contribute to revisions of department guidelines that directly impact the major gifts program.
  • Participate in and assist with major donor, alumni and fundraising events as requested.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to administration, volunteers and staff in major gifts best practices.
  • Abide by the standards of ethics and best practices as defined by the Association of Fundraising Professionals.


Education:A bachelor's degree is required; an advanced degree is a plus, as is record of continuing professional development.
Experience:A minimum of five years of successful major gift fundraising experience, preferably with institutions of higher education and/or musical arts and a knowledge of the Northeast Ohio market.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Strong interest in the mission and vision of the Cleveland Institute of Music;
  • Ability and personality to interact comfortably with students, parents, alumni, volunteer leadership, and philanthropists;
  • Experience working with active, involved volunteer leadership;
  • Strong mentoring skills with experience in providing guidance to other fundraisers;
  • Excellent knowledge of the current philanthropic climate, including issues facing higher education;
  • Ability to design, implement and execute a fundraising plan, including individualized cultivation, solicitation and recognition strategies; knowledge of and experience with all giving methods including stock, planned and deferred gifts;
  • Strong presentation skills to persuasively convey the mission of CIM to diverse groups including donors, board members and others who are important to the organization's overall prosperity;
  • Ability to communicate with a wide range of internal constituents including board members, other high-level volunteers, and all staff, including faculty and be accountable for timely follow-up
  • Ability to apply a sophisticated knowledge of fundraising and development to support an ambitious long-term strategy for expansion and growth;
  • Comfort with the application of new technologies to fundraising and development programs; computer literacy with donor database systems;
  • Ability and willingness to travel as appropriate;
  • A high degree of initiative and energy; creativity, an entrepreneurial spirit and flexibility.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Initially, the Development Officer for Individual and Planned Giving. This position will manage Major Gift Officers and other resources added for the upcoming campaign.
