"Our school's President, Joel Smirnoff, shared a personal story of one of his former students, who was running a music school in Haiti when the earthquake hit," said SGA Co-President Elizabeth Steiner.
"The man lost everything, including his wife and baby on the way. This musician's inspiring survival story was part of our motivation to organize not one, but three concerts, because we felt that this would be the best way to help out."
The CIM Students for Earthquake Relief Benefit Concert Series, presented at Epworth Euclid Church in University Circle on April 6, Plymouth Church in Shaker Heights April 7 and at United Methodist Church of Chagrin Falls April 11, will feature performances from a wide variety of instruments, ensembles, repertoire and CIM students.
The concerts are free, but offerings will be accepted. One hundred percent of funds donated will go directly to disaster relief.
"By going out into the community, we hope to raise awareness about the quality of our musicianship and great amount of compassion we have as students at the Cleveland Institute of Music," Steiner said.
