Alisa Weilerstein Performs at White House
Cellist Alisa Weilerstein, Artist-in-Residence at CIM, performed this month at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue as part of the White House Music Series. Earlier events in the series focused on jazz, country and Latin music.
During the classical event hosted by President and Mrs. Obama, Weilerstein joined violinist Joshua Bell, guitarist Sharon Isbin and pianist Awadagin Pratt. In the afternoon, the four artists performed for 120 students from across the country, even playing with several as part of a learning workshop. Sujari Britt, an 8-year-old cellist who studies at the Manhattan School of Music, performed Boccherini duo for two cellos with Ms. Weilerstein.
Ms. Weilerstein also played "The Swan," the familiar Saint-Saëns cello piece, in an arrangement for cello and marimba with 16-year-old percussionist Jason Yoder, a junior in the music department at the Creative and Performing Arts High School in Pittsburgh. Both of the performances with the young musicians were repeated at the evening concert to standing ovations. Mrs. Obama gave the youngsters a big "shout-out"for practicing even when they don't feel like it and lugging around those heavy instruments - saying that the discipline and determination they're learning will serve them throughout life.
