CIM'S WOMEN'S COMMITTEE PRESENTS "INNER HARMONY" JUNE 24
CLEVELAND, OH (May 5, 2009) The Cleveland Institute of Music's Women's Committee presents a special program, "Inner Harmony – Music and Its Healing Powers," Wednesday, June 24 at noon in the acoustically elegant Mixon Hall. The program will feature internationally renowned authority on the therapeutic uses of music, Dr. Deforia Lane, Associate Director of the Ireland Cancer Center and Director of Music Therapy at University Hospitals of Cleveland, Ireland Cancer Center and Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital.
This program is the second in the CIM Women's Committee's unique series exploring the connections between music, cognition, neurology and the body. It will focus on the role of music and healing in various stages of life and explain how music is used with premature babies, children and in the treatment of Parkinson's, cancer, stroke and other illnesses.
Dr. Lane will be joined by CIM students who will illustrate her lecture with musical examples.
With early intentions of pursuing a singing career, Dr. Lane completed a bachelor degree in vocal performance at the University of Cincinnati Conservatory of Music and began graduate studies at the Curtis Institute of Music. She attended Cleveland State University for her master's degree and earned her Ph.D. in music education from Case Western Reserve University. She holds board certification as a Music Therapist and is certified by the American Music Therapy Association for Faculty Authorization. Dr. Lane has served as a consultant at various institutions, including the Ohio Department of Mental Health, May Clinic, Ohio Hospice Organization, the National Department of Aging and Sesame Street (Children's Television Workshop.)
