ChamberFest Cleveland: Love Triangle
(Community Rental)

Works by Robert and Clara Schumann & Johannes Brahms

In the spring of 1853, a handsome 20-year-old Johannes Brahms entered the orbit of Robert and Clara Schumann, and thus began one of the most infamous love triangles in musical history. Inspired by their protégé’s youthful genius, both Schumann’s wrote new works that year: Clara’s intricate Romances and Robert’s lighthearted Fairy Tales are elegant and lyrical, yet with dark undercurrents. A decade later, Brahms’s F minor piano quintet embodies this quintessentially Romantic tale, from its yearning unison opening to its tumultuous, breathtaking conclusion. Enjoy excerpts from the personal letters of the protagonists interspersed throughout the concert.
