Theory, holds a Ph.D. degree in music theory from the University of Maryland, where he was elected to Phi Kappa Phi. His scholarly interests include the use of tonal hierarchies in ear training, human cognition and music theory pedagogy. He is author of a music theory text that explores Western tonal music from a reductive perspective. Dr. Watts has presented papers dealing with ear training pedagogy and curriculum development to meetings of the Society for Music Theory. He holds a master's degree in cello from the University of Kansas, where he studied with Raymond Stuhl and was elected to Pi Kappa Lambda. He later studied with Robert Newkirk at the Catholic University of America. His playing can be heard on the Orion and Cycling'74 labels. Dr. Watts has appeared as recitalist on noted venues, including Baltimore's Cathedral Concert Series, and his broad professional background ranges from work with Annapolis Opera Theater to Baltimore's Morris J. Mechanic Theater. He has been a frequent presenter at meetings of the American String Teachers Association and has published in their journal, American String Teacher. Dr. Watts was appointed to the CIM faculty in 2008.
