CIM provides an intensive performance environment for all brass students. Two symphony orchestras are the primary focus of our program. Since all students in the orchestras are performance majors, CIM ensembles perform at an exceptionally high level. To complement the orchestral program, an extensive brass orchestral repertoire class also is offered. These sectionals are for both preparation of CIM concert repertoire and readings of standard orchestral pieces.
With enrollment restricted to eight trumpets, every student is assured an extensive amount of performance experience. All members of the trumpet studio also are involved in a weekly trumpet studio class, which offers the unique opportunity for all members of the studio to perform for and interact with both members of the trumpet faculty, Michael Miller and Michael Sachs. There also is liberal access to Cleveland Orchestra rehearsals and concerts at Severance Hall, just down the street from CIM. In addition, students may be involved in all types of chamber music (brass quintets, trumpet ensembles, brass ensembles), wind ensemble, contemporary music, and (through our relationship with adjacent Case Western Reserve University), jazz ensembles and early music.
The joining together of a highly dedicated, focused student body and an equally professional and supportive faculty and staff is a powerful combination that encourages students to achieve the ultimate in their potential. The successes of our students are excellent testimony: Ryan Anthony (Canadian Brass/Dallas Symphony), Benjamin Wright (Boston Symphony), Chris Kiradjieff (Cincinnati Symphony), Adam Luftman (San Francisco Opera), and James Ackley (Professor, University of Connecticut).
Detailed insight into the teaching, playing approach, and philosophy of department head, Michael Sachs, can be found in Daily Fundamentals for the Trumpet, published by International Music Co.
