Tuba Department
CIM provides an intensive performance environment for all brass students. Two symphony orchestras are the primary focus of our program. Since all students in the orchestras are performance majors, the ensembles here perform at an exceptionally high level.
To complement the orchestral program, an extensive brass orchestral repertoire class is also offered. These sectionals are for both preparation of CIM concert repertoire and readings of other standard orchestral pieces.
Enrollment is restricted to 3 or 4 tuba, so an extensive amount of performance experience is assured for every student. All brass teaching is conducted by faculty members who are principals or section players of the Cleveland Orchestra. There is also liberal access to Cleveland Orchestra rehearsals and concerts at Severance Hall, just down the street from CIM. In addition, students may be involved in all types of chamber music (brass quintets, brass ensembles), wind ensemble, contemporary music, and (through our relationship with adjacent Case Western Reserve University), jazz ensembles and early music.
The joining together of a highly dedicated, focused student body and an equally professional and supportive faculty and staff is a powerful combination that encourages students to achieve the ultimate in their potential. The successes of our students who recently won important positions are excellent testimony: Alan Baer (tuba, New York Philharmonic), Guy Hardan (tuba, Jerusalem Symphony), Ryan Anthony (trumpet, Canadian Brass), Benjamin Wright (trumpet, Boston Symphony), Bruce Hudson (horn, Los Angeles Philharmonic), and James Box (trombone, Montreal Symphony).
