Harpsichord Department
Harpsichord studies at CIM explore repertoire for the instrument from late renaissance to contemporary compositions.
The programs is rooted deeply in historical performance practices and focuses on development of technical command of the instrument. Emphasis is placed on variety in touch, stylistic awareness, and the art of expressive playing.
Students in the program collaborate in performances of solo and ensemble works with the CWRU Baroque Orchestra and with modern instrumental ensembles at CIM. For their practice and performance, they have access to four double-manual harpsichords.
One of the nation's leading music schools, CIM is located in a wonderful area of Cleveland called University Circle. Within easy walking distance are Case Western Reserve University (where we share resources in a Joint Music Program that provides CIM's music history and liberal arts classes), several world-class museums, and Severance Hall (home of The Cleveland Orchestra). The quality, quantity, and affordability of cultural life make this area a superb and uniquely enjoyable environment for musical study.
