Because CIM recognizes no substitute for performance experience, pianists who study at CIM are presented with a wide array of opportunities including solo recitals, chamber music, and competitions. The concerto competition, held twice each year, provides several talented students the experience of playing with orchestra; at the discretion of the jury, even those not chosen as actual winners may be awarded non-public readings with orchestra.
Performance experiences are further enhanced by the many guest recitals and master classes offered at CIM by internationally acclaimed pianists. Recently our students have heard and performed for Garrick Ohlsson, Murray Perahia, Emanuel Ax, Andre Watts, Jerome Lowenthal, Ann Schein, Leonard Shure, Edward Aldwell, and Gary Graffman.
CIM boasts more than 100 Steinway grand pianos; through the results of annual competition, selected students may receive instruments for use in their apartments. We also are proud that over 80% of our students receive scholarships and other financial assistance to help in their artistic development and performance endeavors. In addition, the liberal arts and music history courses offered through Case Western Reserve University provide a vital dimension to the Conservatory's curriculum. Finally, opportunities abound for collaborating with CIM's extraordinary instrumental and vocal students.
CIM is just minutes away from Severance Hall, home of the extraordinary Cleveland Orchestra, whose riveting performances continue to enthrall and enrich the lives of our students year round. In addition, Cleveland Orchestra rehearsals are open to our students, and free tickets to the concerts often are provided. CIM also hosts the Cleveland International Piano Competition, which generates a great deal of excitement in the piano world by attracting the finest young talent on the international scene. And, as a cultural leader Cleveland offers a plethora of first-rate concerts and arts experiences at CIM, in University Circle, and throughout the greater area.
The CIM piano faculty believes that music inspires our most profound and intimate feelings, thoughts and expressions. Teaching how to give our ideas a reality through performance opens this beautiful world of sentiment and feelings so that it can be shared with others. Consequently, we focus on addressing musical problems, how to practice, and providing performance opportunities. All of this is in an atmosphere of mutual support, not competition, that provides a nurturing environment to bring out the best in each student. CIM's facilities and programs help to realize this vision.
