The Cleveland Institute of Music is located in the scenic University Circle area of Cleveland, Ohio, adjacent to Case Western Reserve University and just a five-minute walk from Severance Hall, home of The Cleveland Orchestra. Conservatory cello faculty members include Stephen Geber, Mark Kosower, Melissa Kraut, Merry Peckham, and Richard Weiss. They represent an outstanding array of expertise in teaching solo, orchestral and chamber performance that is the hallmark of CIM.
CIM is small enough to both nurture and educate each student, yet large enough to staff two full orchestras. An extensive course in orchestral repertoire and audition preparation is offered to each cello student. In addition, we have an outstanding chamber music program offering advanced string ensemble performance opportunities. The Cavani String Quartet is our artist quartet-in-residence.
Numerous performance opportunities are available in recitals, chamber music and orchestral performances and are on each student's agenda. Each term, master classes are offered featuring nationally known cello teachers as well as distinguished international soloists. Recent visitors have included Yo Yo Ma, Lynn Harrell, Steven Isserlis, and Allie Weilerstein.
The united efforts of a deeply dedicated, focused student body and an equally professional and supportive faculty and staff combine powerfully to encourage students to achieve their ultimate potential. The success of our students who have won important orchestral, chamber, and teaching positions as well as prizes in major international competitions gives testimony to this. Notably, five members of the cello section of The Cleveland Orchestra are graduates of CIM.
