Choral Ensembles at Case
CIM students, through our affiliation with Case Western Reserve University, have to opportunity to participate in several different vocal ensembles and performance groups. Listed below are some of the more popular.
- Case Concert Choir
Consisting of 40-60 select singers and performing a wide variety of interesting and challenging a cappella and accompanied music, the Case Concert Choir rehearses on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:30-5:45 p.m. in Harkness Chapel. The choir was formed in January 2004 as part of the Presidential Initiative to Support the Arts, Humanities, and Social Science. Founded by Robert Dunn, the CCC is directed by Benjamin Ayling.
Case and CIM undergraduate and graduate students are invited to audition each semester for this select group by following the instructions on the Case web site. - Case University Singers
The University Singers perform a wide variety of sacred and secular choral literature. Annual performances include a Fall Choral Concert, Lessons and Carols and a Spring Choral Concert. The majority of singers are non-music majors; the ensemble is directed by E. James Kotora, Jr.
Rehearsals begin the first week of each semester and are held on Thursday evenings from 7:30-9:00 p.m. in Harkness Chapel. Students can choose to sing in the University Singers for 0 or 1 credit by registering for APMU 382D. - Case Early Music Singers
A select a cappella ensemble, the Case Early Music Singers perform music from the Middle Ages through the Baroque. Twelvth-century chant by mystic Hildegard von Bingen; motets by Josquin Desprez, William Byrd, and Orlando di Lasso; and operas by Purcell and Handel have found their way into the group's repertoire. Founded in 1978, CEMS meets weekly throughout the school year. Ross Duffin, directs the ensemble.
Students are eligible through an audition. Blendable vocal quality, good sight-reading, and ability to tune to other voices are advantageous.
