Choral Ensembles at Case
CIM students, through our affiliation with Case Western Reserve University, have to opportunity to participate in several different vocal ensembles and performance groups. Listed below are some of the more popular.
- Case Concert Choir
The Case Concert Choir is an auditioned mixed-voice ensemble with a focus on performing both a cappella and accompanied choral music from a variety of time periods and genres. In addition to shorter pieces, the ensemble also performs larger works of choral-orchestral repertoire through collaborations with the Case University Circle Symphony Orchestra and The Church of the Covenant (Mozart Requiem, 2010; Vaughn Williams Toward the Unknown Region, 2011). Case Concert Choir was originally founded in 2004 as part of a University Presidential Initiative to support the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. Under the direction of Dr. Matthew Garrett, Concert Choir maintains a tradition of excellence in performance, strives to improve group and individual musicianship skills, and fosters community building.
The ensemble is open to any undergraduate or graduate student, faculty, or staff member at CWRU or CIM by audition. Students may choose to participate in the ensemble for 0 or 1 credit (MUEN 382). Auditions are normally held the first week of classes every semester. For more information, contact Dr. Garrett directly: email@example.com or visit the Chorus web page at music.case.edu/ensembles/case-concert-choir.
- Case University Singers
University Singers is a non-auditioned mixed-voice ensemble open to any undergraduate or graduate student, faculty, or staff member in the University who enjoy singing. The ensemble performs a wide variety of accompanied and a cappella repertoire. University Singers welcomes the opportunity to bring members of our University Circle community together to make music! The ability to read music is not required for participation and there is no formal audition. Students should be able to match pitch and can expect to vocalize for the conductor to make sure they are singing a voice part that is appropriate for them. Goals of the University Singers include developing basic musicianship skills, learning healthy vocal techniques, and sharing music with fellow singers and the community. Students may choose to participate in University Singers for 0 or 1 credit (MUEN 387). For additional information, please contact Dr. Matthew Garrett, Director of Choirs (firstname.lastname@example.org).
- Case Early Music Singers
A select a cappella ensemble, the Case Early Music Singers perform music from the Middle Ages through the Baroque. Twelvth-century chant by mystic Hildegard von Bingen; motets by Josquin Desprez, William Byrd, and Orlando di Lasso; and operas by Purcell and Handel have found their way into the group's repertoire. Founded in 1978, CEMS meets weekly throughout the school year. Ross Duffin, directs the ensemble.
Students are eligible through an audition. Blendable vocal quality, good sight-reading, and ability to tune to other voices are advantageous.
