Each department in this area is distinguished by teaching faculty from the world-renowned Cleveland Orchestra. Weekly lessons guide students in the study of the fundamentals of technique and in developing sight-reading and musicianship skills and knowledge of repertoire. And each accepts a limited number of students to maintain carefully balanced enrollments that ensure optimum learning and performing opportunities for all woodwind students.
All undergraduate and graduate students participate fully in large ensembles and numerous performance activities, with Cleveland Orchestra members providing coaching. Guest conductors take the orchestral podium on a regular basis for performances and/or rehearsals, with Michael Stern and Christoph von Dohnanyi providing recent CIM visits. The CIM Orchestra presents standard literature across musical style periods, while also performing annually a new music concert, two opera productions, student composition performances and recordings, and school and family concerts. Twice each year, the orchestra plays in the home of the Cleveland Orchestra, Severance Hall; other concerts are presented in CIM's Kulas and Mixon Halls. Students also may explore additional repertoire by playing in the work-study supported conducting lab orchestra, and all undergraduate students perform regularly with the University Circle Wind Ensemble. Some choose to participate as well in a Case Jazz Ensemble.
Students' repertoire includes solo, chamber, orchestral, and operatic literature, and instruction is enhanced by frequent visits from artists eager to provide master classes. Two concerto competitions annually provide four or five of CIM's best students coveted opportunities to be featured with the orchestra. Additional slots are provided on student conducting recitals. Northeast Ohio boasts a number of professional and semi-professional orchestras, and CIM students frequently have the opportunity to audition and perform with these regional ensembles, thereby enriching their pre-professional preparation and acquiring valuable experience.
Perhaps nothing compares with the benefits accrued through CIM's relationship with the Cleveland Orchestra. Woodwind students take regular advantage of opportunities to attend rehearsals and concerts, and Cleveland Orchestra guest soloists are among the luminaries offering master classes at CIM.
