Second YouTube Symphony Returns with CIM Hopefuls
The YouTube Symphony Orchestra, the world's first online-audition only ensemble, led by Michael Tilson Thomas, has launched its second season. Musicians from all over the world submitted excerpts from classical / electronica composer Mason Bates' work titled "Mothership" with hopes of performing at the Sydney Opera House in Australia in March.
Five CIM students have made the final voting round. Congratulatons to Ben Reidhead (horn), Nishana Gunaratne (bass), Rimbo Wong (viola), Katie Tertell (cello) and CIM alumna Rosalind Soltow (viola). Supporters can vote for their favorites daily. Voting ends January 14.

Kudos To...
The CIM Cello Department: This year's Sphinx Competition, to be held in Ann Arbor in February, features only three cellists as finalists in the Senior Round: Alex Cox, Josue Gonzalez and Erica Snowden -- and all three are CIM students who study with Dr. Melissa Kraut.

Three Oscars, four Grammys, a Tony, three Golden Globes and a Pulitzer Prize - Hamlisch has won them all for scores that include The Way We Were, Sophie's Choice, Take the Money and Run, his adaptation of Scott Joplin's music for The Sting, and of course, A Chorus Line. This glittering evening is brought to you by the CIM Women's Committee and sponsored by the Invacare Corporation. · The third thrilling season of the MIXON HALL MASTERS SERIES wraps up in February and tickets are going fast. Critically acclaimed pianist, Leon Fleisher, concludes the series on Thursday, February 10. After a neurological disorder rendered his right hand immobile at the height of his career, Fleisher became a master of left-handed repertoire and built a career as a conductor. Now, with the use of his right hand restored, he'll perform works by J.S. Bach and Schubert at 8 p.m. in Mixon Hall. · Treat your loved ones to comedy and drama from the hand of an 18-year-old Mozart, Garden Girl in Disguise, performed by the CIM OPERA THEATER, directed by David Bamberger, with the CIM Orchestra, conducted by Harry Davidson, February 23-26 in Kulas Hall.

· Give the gift of a much needed music -break in the workday. The Women's Committee of CIM presents "There Is Nothing Like a Dame," the next event in their MUSICAL LUNCHEON SERIES, on Wednesday, February 23, 11:30 a.m., at Stages Restaurant at the Cleveland Play House. CIM's head of Collaborative Piano, Anita Pontremoli, presents this program featuring female performers. As always, lunch is provided, but "take out" is available for guest having to return to work. · Visit the CIM MUSIC STORE for sheet music, cds, instrument accessories, CIM sweatshirts and more! The Music Store is located on the lower level of CIM, but shop early - it's closed during winter break (December 24-January2).
