Introduction

Sonia Xinyuan Hu is an educator and pianist recognized for her interdisciplinary
approach to music learning. With over a decade of teaching and performance
experience, she emphasizes the body as a natural instrument for musical expression and
understanding. Drawing from her background in ballet, ballroom, modern dance, and
contact improvisation, Hu guides students to connect movement and sound as an
integrated form of communication.

Hu’s Eurhythmics classes foster creativity, curiosity, and play. She incorporates a wide
range of interactive tools and sensory-based activities to develop musicality,
coordination, and interpretive freedom. Her approach also utilizes breathwork and
mindfulness practices that support healthy technique, reduce performance tension, and
cultivate a grounded, confident stage presence. This integrated approach builds both
kinesthetic fluency and artistic sensitivity, helping students bring intention and nuance
into everything they do.

In her keyboard instruction, Hu highlights the instrument as both a technical and
expressive medium. She leads students beyond basic mechanics, helping them explore
how touch, gesture, and phrasing shape musical meaning. Drawing on the embodied
principles of her Eurhythmics teaching, Hu encourages students to experience melody,
rhythm, and harmony through the body before expressing them at the instrument.
Alongside her teaching, Hu maintains an active career as both a pianist and dancer and
collaborates regularly with interdisciplinary artists. She also serves as Music Director at
a local church in the Cleveland area.
