Internet / World Wide Web
The World Wide Web is a vast network of web sites. It is a collage of resources assembled by a diverse group of persons for vastly different purposes.
There are different types of web sites. Sometimes the suffix of the URL may be helpful in determining the purpose of the web page. Here are a few examples:
| Type | URL ends with: | Description |
| Educational | .edu | Web site of an educational institution. May also contain personal web pages of persons associated with it. Example: www.cim.edu |
| Organizational | .org | Web site of an organization. It represents the concerns of its members. May be dedicated to a specific purpose.
Example: American Federation of Musicians (www.afm.org) |
| Commercial | .com | Web site of a business or commercial entity. Dedicated to selling merchandise or services. Also includes web sites providing entertainment or news services.
Example: Arkiv Music (www.arkivmusic.com) |
| Government | .gov | Web site of a government agency, office or department. Provides information about their purpose and services.
Example: Library of Congress, American Memory Project (http://memory.loc.gov) |
| Personal | .net | Web sites maintained by individuals or other groups who "rent" web space through commercial services.
Example: www.kcoyle.net |
