I. The Robinson Music LibraryClassificationThe Robinson Music Library uses the Library of Congress classification system to organize its collection. A familiarity with how this system works will help you navigate our collection. HINT: once you know a call number, you will find related items adjacent to the item on the shelf. M/ML/MTThree sections (both in circulating/reference collection)
The "M" section: Groupings by instrumentsAfter the "M," music is organized by instrumentation. Music for "1" instrument will be found in the M 100s, for "2" instruments in the M 200s; for 5 instruments in the M 500s, and for larger ensembles in the M 1000s. Vocal music is located between M 1495 and M 2199. "ML" & "MT" Groupings by topicsThe ML and MT sections are organized by topic. ML 410 is the location for biographies and books about composers. This section is organized alphabetically by composer. For instance, all books about Mozart may be located at ML 410 M877. Library guidesSo how do you find the call number for the music or book you are looking for? The library catalog can assist you in finding books, music, compact discs, videos, and DVDs in our collection. However, there are a variety of guides that will acquaint you with the important call numbers regarding your instrument or area of study. These are located under "Local Resources."
