I. The Robinson Music Library

Searching by subject

The subject search is best for finding books ABOUT music and musicians (as opposed to scores and recordings of music). The library catalog uses established subject headings to describe the contents of a particular book.

To find a book ABOUT a composer and his/her music, search by the person's name as a subject.

      Example: Copland, Aaron

Subject headings often have "sub-headings" that describe the focus of the book. For example, books listed under "Copland, Aaron -- Criticism and interpretation" will discuss Copland's compositions in terms of analysis and performance issues..

Some common subject headings in music are:

      Music - History and criticism
      Music - Instruction and study
Music - United States [Or other country]
