Circulation Services

Borrowing Library Materials

Who are qualified borrowers?

The Robinson Music Library is a private library. Library services and collections are restricted to qualified borrowers. These include:

  • Current CIM faculty members and staff
  • Currently enrolled students (conservatory or preparatory)
  • Faculty members and student majors from the music and dance departments at Case Western Reserve University
  • CIM alumni who have a current alumni card
  • Special Borrowers, including Cleveland Orchestra personnel, who have made prior arrangements with the library

What is the loan period for circulating materials?

Circulating materials may be checked out by qualified borrowers for a "semester." For CIM faculty members, staff, and students, a semester is the duration of the academic term (Fall or Spring). For preparatory faculty members, students and other special borrowers, the semester is the duration of the preparatory semester. Conservatory and Preparatory/Continuing Education faculty members may borrow audio/visual materials for a seven day period.

Special borrowers, including continuing education/preparatory students and alumni, have a maximum checkout limit of ten items.

In order to make materials available to all library patrons, all library materials are subject to recall after two weeks.

Course Reserve Items

Books and scores may be placed on reserve by faculty at the Institute, and by music and dance faculty at CWRU. Media materials on reserve may be found at the Media Center desk. Reserve items are available for use in the Library. Most reserve items may be checked out for overnight use, 15 minutes before closing. Such items are due back 30 minutes after opening the next morning, and if not returned, will accrue fines at the rate of $1.00 per hour.

Reserve items are kept behind the main circulation desk. The items are filed alphabetically by author/composer, not by course. Do not expect the desk worker to be able to locate an item if you can not furnish the name of the author. To see what is on reserve for a particular course, check the reserve lists function in the online catalog. In this list, you may search by course number or professor's name.

Professors interested in placing items on reserve should contact James Hilton, Circulation Supervisor at the Library (795-3114).
