Reference Services

Accessing information about music can be a complex process. The Robinson Music Library serves as a gateway not only to its collections but also to a variety of external resources in music, both in print and online forms. Students and faculty members are encouraged to be proficient in the following skills:

  • Searching the online catalog for music (books, scores & recordings).
  • Identifying and effectively using key reference resources in music.
  • Understanding the depth and variety of resources available to them in print and online formats for music research.
  • Evaluating information critically based on the following criteria: authority, currency, objectivity, reliability, and navigation/organization.
  • Developing efficient research strategies for information needs and research projects.

To encourage the development of these skills, the library provides the following services. You may contact Bonnie Houser Eggers, Reference Librarian, for more information.

Point-of-Need Instruction
A library staff member is on duty, Monday through Saturday, during library hours to assist library patrons with research needs.
One-on-One Consultation
Bonnie Houser, Reference Librarian, is available to meet with CIM students and faculty members to assist with research projects. Research consultations will introduce key library resources related to a specific topic, demonstrate effective search strategies for research databases and other tools, and introduce key strategies for accomplishing research. Faculty members are encouraged to make consultation with a librarian a required component for significant student research projects. Research takes time and reflection. Therefore, consultations are best scheduled at least three weeks prior to the project's deadline. To set up an appointment, contact Bonnie Houser, ext. 251 (216-795-3151).
Classroom Instruction
Instruction may be custom designed to address key library resources and skills for a class assignment. Bonnie Houser Eggers is available to develop and teach classes about specific resources in music.
