10:00 a.m. EDT, Saturday, May 18
CIM's 2013 Commencement exercises will be held in Kulas Hall on Saturday, May 18 at 10 a.m. More than 130 students will receive their bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees, along with Artist Diplomas and Professional certificates.
The ceremony will feature El Sistema founder Dr. José Antonio Abreu, as CIM presents him with an honorary doctorate. Founded in 1975 in a parking garage in Caracas, Venezula, with just 11 children, Dr. Abreu’s program has been so successful at using music as a common language that it has been adapted in countries around the globe—including the United States. In Cleveland, CIM alumna and Cleveland Orchestra violinist Isabel Trautwein launched an El Sistema program at The Rainey Institute in 2011.
Dr. Abreu will give the 2013 Commencement Address to graduating students, with the assistance of a translator. Musical performances will include the Omer Quartet performing Mendelssohn; Andrew Manea, baritone, accompanied by Andrew Rosenblum, piano, performing Richard Strauss; and Matthew Allen, violoncello, and Pin-Hsuan Huang, piano, performing Cassadó.
