Sean Schulze

Chair, Preparatory Piano Department, received a Bachelor of Music degree, summa cum laude, and Master of Music degree, cum laude, from the University of Natal (South Africa); and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Arizona, where he was invited to study on a full scholarship. He studied piano with Moira Birks and Isabella Stengel, , two of the foremost pedagogues in South Africa. While in the U.S., he studied with Nicholas Zumbro, Paula Fan and Caio Pagano. He has performed in master classes for many leading pianists and pedagogues, including Yoheved Kaplinsky, Bela Siki, Nelita True, Martin Canin and Joseph Banowetz. A prize-winner of several competitions, he has performed as concerto soloist with the Cape Town Symphony Orchestra, The Natal Philharmic, The University of Arizona Symphony Orchestra, the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, the Suburban Symphony Orchestra and the Eastern Arizona Symphony Orchestra. He has also performed as a solo recitalist and chamber musician throughout the U.S., South Africa, Mexico, Ecuador and Brazil, and has been invited to teach as a guest artist at the University of Rio de Janeiro on several occasions. A published scholar, Dr. Schulze's research on Beethoven's Fantasy for Piano, Op. 77 appeared in the Beethoven Journal in 2004. A noted teacher at the pre-college level, his students continue to win numerous awards and he is regularly invited to adjudicate contests and present teacher workshops at the state and local levels. In 2008, Dr. Schulze founded and directed the first edition of Summer Sonata, an intensive two-week program of lessons and master classes for pianists aged 9-18. He was appointed to CIM faculty in 2002.
