Kirsten Docter is a member of the Naumburg Chamber Music award-winning Cavani String Quartet. A first prize winner of both the Primrose International and American String Teachers Association Viola Competitions, she has performed on major concert series and festivals throughout North America and Europe. Festivals include Aspen, Yellow Barn, Mimir (TX and Melbourne, Australia), Banff Centre for the Arts, Sitka Summer Music, Interlochen, Madeline Island, Kneisel Hall, Yale Summer School of Music and Art at Norfolk and Perlman Music Program. She served on the jury of the 2011 Primrose International Viola Competition. Ms. Docter has collaborated with such musicians as Itzhak Perlman, Jaime Laredo, Alisa Weilerstein, Stephanie Blythe, Nathan Gunn, as well as members of the Cleveland, Juilliard, Miami, Takács, Ying, Emerson, Borodin, Amadeus, St. Lawrence String Quartets. She can be heard on the Azica, New World and Gasparo Records labels.
Ms. Docter and her colleagues in the Cavani Quartet serve as ensemble-in-residence at the Cleveland Institute of Music. Appearances include Carnegie Hall and Alice Tully Hall in New York, the Corcoran Gallery of Art and Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., Festival de L’Epau in France, and the Honolulu Chamber Music Society. The Quartet has been featured on National Public Radio’s Performance Today and St. Paul Sunday, NBC, CBS, ABC, and PBS television. They have received the ASCAP-Chamber Music America Award for Adventurous Programming of Contemporary Music, two Guarneri String Quartet Residency Awards and eight Chamber Music America Residency Partnership Grants. They were formerly in residence at the University of Texas, Austin, and the University of Southern Illinois, Carbondale.
A member of the viola and chamber music faculties at the Cleveland Institute of Music, Ms. Docter has also taught at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. A graduate of the Oberlin Conservatory where she studied with Jeffery Irvine and Lynne Ramsey, she continued her studies at the Curtis Institute of Music with Karen Tuttle.
