Summer Sonata

A two-week program for pianists, Junior Level aged 10-12 and Senior Level aged 13-18. This program endeavors to provide the ideal environment for young pianists to nourish and improve their musical and piano skills.

Directed by Dr. Sean Schulze and drawing on the Cleveland Institute of Music's distinguished Preparatory and Conservatory faculty, Summer Sonata features regular private lessons, participation in master classes with renowned teachers and guest artists, as well as daily supervised practice sessions. Participants will also be teamed up for daily practice and coaching in a duo-piano format.

In addition, students will attend group classes in theory and ear-training, Dalcroze eurhythmics, form and composition, and piano literature. Several special presentations will cover areas such as the inner workings of the piano, workshops on performance and memorization and much more. Students will also be given the opportunity to savor the cultural offerings available in Cleveland's renowned University Circle. The program will conclude with a public recital in Mixon Hall on June 28, 2013.

Summer Sonata is proud to have amongst its alumni students who have excelled in various local, state and national competitions. Program alumni have performed as concerto soloists with the Cleveland Orchestra, the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra, The Suburban Symphony Orchestra, the Lakeland Civic Orchestra and have won first prizes in the Piano Ohio Competition, the OMTA Graves Competition and the Heidelberg University Performance Pacesetter Competition.

Previous masterclass presenters have included Kathryn Brown, Elizabeth DeMio, Emanuela Friscioni, Joela Jones, Donna Lee, Antonio Pompa-Baldi, Olga Radosavljevich, Sean Schulze, Daniel Shapiro, Sandra Shapiro, Gerardo Teissonnière, the Westhuizen Duo and Jerry Wong.

Who Should Apply?

All pianists aged 10-18 are encouraged to apply. Pianists, applying at the Junior Level must have reached at least sonatina level or above, (Clementi, Op. 36, #3 or equivalent). Pianists at the Senior Level are expected to be playing repertoire at the level of Beethoven Op.49#2 or above.

This program will cater especially to committed, serious young pianists, focused on developing their skills to the utmost in a brief two-week period.

Participants from out of town are encouraged to apply. Summer Sonata is able to make affordable dormitory accommodation available to students who are accompanied by a parent or legal adult guardian.

    A Typical Day ...

A special orientation meeting for parents and students will he held on the first day of the Summer Sonata, Monday, June 17, 2013 at 8:30 a.m. The program will conclude with a final recital in Mixon Hall on Friday, June 28, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. The recital is free and open to the public.

Application & Tuition

The Application Deadline is April 12, 2013. All students wishing to attend are required to complete an application and attend an audition at CIM on Sunday, April 21, 2013 or Sunday, April 28, 2013.

Tuition for Summer Sonata is $925. A non-refundable application fee of $35 is required with application. Upon receiving an acceptance letter, a payment of $465 is due by May 8, with the balance due by June 1. Scholarships are available and will be awarded based on audition performance and financial need. Please make checks payable to Cleveland Institute of Music and mail the application and check to:
