Summer Sonata
July 7-18th, 2008
Cleveland Institute of Music
About CIM Summer Sonata Directed by Dr. Sean Schulze and drawing on the Cleveland Institute of Music’s distinguished Preparatory and Conservatory faculty, this two-week program for pianists, ages 9-18, will provide the ideal environment for young students to nourish and improve their musical and piano skills. Central to this experience will be regular private lessons, participation in master classes with renowned teachers and guest artists, as well as daily supervised practice sessions. Participants will also be teamed up for daily practice and coaching in a duo-piano format. In addition, students will attend group classes in theory and ear-training, Dalcroze eurhythmics, improvisation and piano literature. Several presentations will cover areas such as the inner workings of the piano, workshops on sight-reading, effective practice strategies and much more. The program will conclude with a public recital in Mixon Hall at the Cleveland Institute of Music on July 18, 2008. Faculty

The program will cater especially to committed, serious young pianists, focused on developing their skills to the utmost in a brief two-week period. A Typical Day
How to Apply All students wishing to attend are required to complete an application and attend an audition at CIM on Sunday, April 13, 2008 or Sunday, April 20, 2008. Audition Requirement Performance of two contrasting works. Parents are requested to attend the audition and will have the opportunity to meet briefly with Sean Schulze in order to ask any questions regarding their child’s participation in the program. While selected participants will be encouraged to study new works during the program, all students are strongly encouraged to attend with repertoire already “in the finger” in order to ensure successful participation for the final recital. Space in the program is limited and not all applicants will be automatically accepted. Audition performance will be the decisive factor in determining a student’s acceptance. Welcome Meeting
