Application Instructions

The deadline for applicantions has passed. You can download the handbook here (PDF).

Applicants ages 14-19 are invited to send scores for 1 to 3 original works. Works in progress are acceptable, but at least one work must be complete. Works submitted may be for any instrumentation.

Please mark all scores clearly with composer's name. Do not send original manuscripts. Send only photocopies or printouts. The Young Composers Program is not responsible for lost or damaged scores. Scores should be appropriately legible. Scores should be appropriately legible.

Applicants should ask a music teacher or mentor who is familiar with their musicianship to write a brief reference letter addressing the applicant's talent, desire, work habits and reliability. Multiple references are allowed. The reference letter can be sent under separate cover and is also due also due March 25.

Applicants should indicate their top three preferences for instrumentation of a new piece to be written for performance at the program. The ensemble will include clarinet, violin, violoncello, piano; please list your top three preferences in order from among that ensemble, including the full ensemble if desired. Works to be performed at the YCP must be no longer than 8 minutes.

Applications accompanied by a self-addressed stamped envelope will be returned to applicants after review.

Acceptance

Applicants will be notified of their acceptance by April 7, 2009.

2009 Tuition and Fees
Tuition - $650
Housing, Breakfast and Dinner - $300
Non-refundable Application Fee - $35

Housing will be available to all students. Breakfast and dinner will be provided each day. The program will conclude with a picnic lunch on Saturday afternoon. All events are held at the Cleveland Institute of Music.

Students are expected to have their own health coverage in the event of an emergency.
