American violinist David Updegraff has won a distinguished reputation for his wide scope of musical achievement. As a recitalist, he has performed widely to critical acclaim in major cities of the United States and Europe. As a featured soloist he has performed concerti ranging from Bach to Mozart to Sibelius with a number of American orchestras. A strong proponent for contemporary music, Mr. Updegraff has had the privilege of playing many world premieres of works by prominent American composers.
His students have been winners and laureates in numerous International and National competitions including: The Sion International Competition, theTibor Varga International Competition, the Gyeongnam International Music Competition, The Nederlands Viool Competitie and the Fischoff (Chamber Music) Competition. They have been soloists with such orchestras as The Cleveland Orchestra, The Berlin Symphony, The Seattle Symphony and the Louisville Orchestra. Mr. Updegraff has served on the jury in such competitions as: The Sion Valais Competion (Switzerland) The Chicago Symphony Young Artists Competition, The Lennox International Competition, The William Byrd International Competition, The Julius Stulberg Young Artists Competition and many more.
He spent 22 summers teaching at the ENCORE School for Strings in Hudson, Ohio. He taught for four years at the International Music Program at Pilsen, in the Czech Republic. In 2012 and 2013, Mr. Updegraff taught at the Foulger International Music Program.
Mr. Updegraff was appointed professor of violin at CIM in 1987 and was chairman of the violin department rom 1988 to 2010.
