We want to ensure that CIM community members feel supported. Therefore, we have outlined several confidential and non-confidential resources to support individuals going through our process. These resources are available for complainants, respondents and witnesses who seek support. We've also outlined some tips to help faculty and staff members who may be alerted to potential sexual misconduct or gender discrimination situations.

Confidential Resources

Confidential resources are those members of the community who are licensed or designated by law as professionals who can receive privileged communication and information regarding possible sexual misconduct in the context of a professional relationship with the reporter of that information.

Confidential resources are not required to report allegations of sexual misconduct to Designated Reporting Representatives unless required by law such as the duty to report an imminent threat to self or others. Confidential resources provide advice, support, and guidance about how to manage the situation without initiating university action. Any conversation with a confidential resource is not considered a report to the university or a request that any action be taken by the university in response to any allegation.

Steps for Faculty and Staff

Faculty and staff members are required to report all forms of sexual misconduct and gender discrimination to the Title IX Coordinator Sarah Hopfe or Designated Reporting Representatives. These include sexual harassment, sexual assault, dating violence, domestic violence, stalking and discrimination based on an individual's gender.

When sexual misconduct or gender discrimination is reported to you:

  • Let the reporting individual know that you are required to report incidents of sexual misconduct and gender discrimination to the University Title IX Coordinator or Designated Reporting Representative;
  • Provide a list of confidential resources for the reporting individual. It is alright if the student would like you to serve as their support person. As long as there is not a conflict of interest;
  • Support the reporting individual. Validate the reporting individual's feelings;
  • Respect the privacy of the reporting individual. Do not discuss the information shared with you to anyone outside of the Title IX Coordinator.

Things to avoid:

  • Conducting an independent investigation;
  • Notifying the respondent of the complaint;
  • Attempting to mediate the issue;
  • Discouraging the complainant to file a report; and
  • Asking bias or weighted questions that could be viewed as blaming.
