The popular series of monthly concerts in the galleries featuring young artists from the Cleveland Institute of Music and the joint program with Case Western Reserve University’s early and baroque music programs enters its fifth season. Outstanding conservatory musicians present mixed programs of chamber music amid the museum’s collections for a unique and intimate experience—concerts regularly feature instruments from the museum’s keyboard collection.

From standard repertoire to unknown gems, these early-evening, hour-long performances are a delightful after-work encounter or the start of a night out. Programs announced the week of the performance.

Musicology, CWRU, has published two books on French music, criticism and aesthetics in the early modern period. Her third book, The Triumph of Pleasure: Louis XIV and the Politics of Spectacle (University of Chicago Press, 2008), focuses on the shifting intersections of musical theater, politics and art at the court of Louis XIV and in the Parisian public sphere. Recent articles have appeared in the Journal of the American Musicological Society and in the Art Bulletin. Prof. Cowart is currently serving as Sylvan C. and Pamela Coleman Memorial Fund Fellow in Art History at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, where she is engaged in a project continuing her work with Watteau, music and competing political ideologies in early eighteenth-century France. She has also received support from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Council of Learned Societies, and has presented her work and chaired panels at international conferences and symposia in France, England, Belgium, Canada, Switzerland, Norway, and the U.S. She is currently serving as president of the Society for Seventeenth-Century Music and chair of the Alvin H. Johnson-AMS 50 Fellowship committee of the American Musicological Society. She also serves as a visiting evaluator for the National Association of Schools of Music, and for the past five years has served as chair of the Department of Music at Case and co-director of the CWRU/CIM Joint Music Program. She was appointed to CWRU faculty in 2001.
