Preparatory piano, began piano studies in Honolulu, Hawaii. There, he won the Hawaii Young Artist Competition, resulting in his debut with the Honolulu Symphony. Mr. Nishimura received Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from CIM, where he studied with prominent artist-teachers Olga Radosavljevich, Paul Schenly and Vitya Vronsky Babin. Upon graduation, he was awarded the William Kurzban Award for Outstanding Achievement and Excellence in Piano. In the summers, Mr. Nishimura attended the Chautauqua Institution and the Marlboro Music Festival. He has also studied at the Vienna Hochschule für Musik; the Royal College of Music in London, England; The Juilliard School and Mannes College in New York; the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada; and the Paris Conservatoire. He has played in master classes for Grant Johannesen, Jerome Lowenthal, Martin Canin, Andre-Michel Schub, Emanuel Ax and Dalton Baldwin, and has coached with John Barstow, Lee Kum-Sing, Pascal Devoyon, Hans and Carmen Graf and Mitsuko Uchida. Mr. Nishimura taught at CIM's Preparatory summer program Camp Klavier, where he assisted Olga Radosavljevich for numerous years, and at the Kinhaven Chamber Music Camp in Weston, Vermont. He has adjudicated at the National Federation of Music Clubs and the African-American Foundation for Music. He has given master classes at the University of Hawaii; in Korea and Japan and, for the past three summers, at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music in China. His students have won numerous competitions and have soloed with The Cleveland Orchestra, Cleveland Philharmonic, Case Western Reserve Symphony, Lakeland Symphony and Suburban Symphony. Mr. Nishimura has performed with members of The Cleveland Orchestra, the Ohio Chamber Symphony and the Kamaaina Chamber Players of Hawaii. He is an advocate for new music and has given world premieres by Irby Trimble and of Alan Shaw's Second Piano Sextet. His solo concerts have taken him to Austria, England, Italy, China, Japan, Korea and throughout the United States. For ten years, Mr. Nishimura served as worship director for Mayfield United Methodist Church. He is a member of Mu Phi Epsilon, and was appointed to the CIM faculty in 1986.
