Head, Trumpet Department; Chair, Brass Division, was appointed to the CIM faculty in 1988.

He serves as head of the trumpet department and Chairman of the brass division. Principal trumpet of The Cleveland Orchestra since 1988, he has numerous solo performances with The Cleveland Orchestra including the world premiere performances of John Williams’ Concerto for Trumpet, Michael Hersch’s Night Pieces, Matthias Pintscher’s Chute d’Etoiles (Concerto for Two Trumpets) and the United States premiere of Hans Werner Henze’s Requiem. Mr. Sachs education includes a BA in History from The University of California at Los Angeles, with additional studies at The Juilliard School of Music. His primary teachers include Mark Gould, Anthony Plog and James Stamp. Prior to coming to Cleveland, he was fourth/utility trumpet with the Houston Symphony Orchestra. While in Houston, Mr. Sachs also performed with the Houston Grand Opera and served on the faculty at the Shepherd School of Music, Rice University. Prior to that, he performed with many groups in New York including the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, New York Philharmonic, Orchestra of St. Luke's, the New York Chamber Symphony and Speculum Musicae. Mr. Sachs has served as a faculty member at the Aspen Music Festival, Blekinge International Brass Academy (Karlskrona, Sweden), Domaine Forget, Eastern Music Festival, National Brass Symposium, National Orchestral Institute, New World Symphony, Summer Brass Institute, Summit Brass, and as principal trumpet/ instructor in the Solti Orchestral Project at Carnegie Hall in 1994. He is the author of The Orchestral Trumpet, a 176-page comprehensive overview of orchestral literature for trumpet with accompanying CD, “Daily Fundamentals for the Trumpet” and “Mahler: Symphonic Works” complete trumpet parts, volumes I-III. Additionally , he co-authored 14 Duets for Trumpet and Trombone, with Joseph Alessi, principal trombone of the New York Philharmonic. Since 2008, Mr. Sachs has been the editor of the “Inside the Orchestra Section” column for the International Trumpet Guild Journal. Recently, he was extensively involved in the acoustic design and play testing for the creation of the new Artisan line of Bach Stradivarius trumpets.
