All applicants under the age of 12 must prepare two contrasting pieces of their choice.

Bassoon

Applicants ages 12-18:

  • One Julius Weissenborn study from “50 Bassoon Studies. Op.8. Vol.2” 
  • Choose one slow and one fast movement of a concerto sonata or solo of the applicant’s choice  
  • Three octave scales: Bb, C Major and chromatic and any 2-octave harmonic minor scale 

Suggested repertoire (students may choose other pieces of a similar nature):

  • Concerti: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Carl Maria von Weber or any Antonio Vivaldi concerto
  • Sonatas: Georg Philipp Telemann, Benedetto Marcello, Paul Hindemith, Johann Ernst Galliard, Johann Friedrich Fasch  
  • Solos: Senaille Allegro Spiritoso, Bourdeau Premier Solo 
Cello

Applicants ages 12-18: 

  • One étude of the applicant's choice 
  • First movement from a concerto of the applicant's choice 
Clarinet

Applicants ages 12-18:

  • Major, minor and chromatic scales in two octaves
  • An étude of the applicant's choice 
  • One movement or section from a piece of the applicant's choice
Composition

Applicants ages 12-15: 

  • One complete score of at least 2 minutes in length (works in progress will be accepted)
  • At least one audio recording of a complete score 
  • One video recording of one piece of the applicant’s choice on an instrument or voice demonstrating technical and musical proficiency 

Applicants ages 16-18: 

  • Two complete scores of at least 5 minutes in length, with contrasting instrumentation (at least one score must be complete)
  • Audio recordings of complete score(s) 
  • Video recording of one piece of the applicant’s choice on an instrument or voice demonstrating technical and musical proficiency  
Double Bass

Applicants ages 12-18: 

 

  • One movement of a standard concerto 
  • One orchestral excerpt of the applicant’s choice 
  • Major and minor 3 octave scale and arpeggio, with 2 contrasting styles of bowing 

Suggested repertoire (students may choose other pieces of a similar nature):

  • Pieces from Progressive Repertoire Volume 3, book 6 by George Vance
  • Unaccompanied contemporary piece (such as a Rabbath étude from Volume 2)
  • Any Bach Cello Suite
Flute

Applicants ages 12-18:

  • Two works of the student's choice that demonstrate technical ability
  • Two orchestral excerpts of the applicant’s choice 
  • Chromatic scale - three octaves, major scales - two octaves, minor scales (harmonic) - two octaves 
Guitar

Applicants ages 12-18:

  • Two contrasting pieces of the applicant’s choice 
  • One major scale of the applicant's choice  

Prepared pieces should be at least the level of difficulty of those found in the Bridges guitar books, published by Royal Conservatory of Music (any edition), or the Bridges Syllabus, according to the grade the applicant is entering at the time of enrollment, as listed below:  

  • Grades 8: level 3 or above 
  • Grades 9: level 4 or above 
  • Grade 10: level 5 or above

  • Third solo on another instrument of the applicant’s choice (e.g. timpani, multiple percussion, drum set, etc.)
