For applicants submitting a recorded audition video, please follow the audition requirements below, excluding sight reading. All applicants under the age of 12 must prepare two contrasting pieces of their choice.

Instructions by Area of Study

Bassoon

Applicants ages 12-18:

  • One Julius Weissenborn study from “50 Bassoon Studies. Op.8. Vol.2” 
  • Choose one slow and one fast movement from the following list: 
    • Concerti: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Carl Maria von Weber or any Antonio Vivaldi concerto
    • Sonatas: Georg Philipp Telemann, Benedetto Marcello, Paul Hindemith, Johann Ernst Galliard, Johann Friedrich Fasch  
    • Solos: Senaille Allegro Spiritoso, Bourdeau Premier Solo  
  • Three octave scales: Bb, C Major and chromatic and any 2-octave harmonic minor scale 
Cello

Applicants ages 12-15:  

  • Prelude and Gigue from Bach Cello Suites 1, 2 or 3  
  • Choose one: Haydn Concerto in C Major or Boccherini Concerto in Bb, first movement
  • An étude from one of the following composers: David Popper or Jean-Louis Duport 

Applicants ages 16-18:  

  • Prelude and Gigue from Bach Cello Suites 3, 4 or 5 
  • Etude from one of the following composers: David Popper, Carlo Alfredo Piatti, Jean-Louis Duport 
  • First movement from one of the following concertos/composers: Haydn C Major, Haydn D Major, Boccherini Bb, Antonín Dvořák, Edward Elgar, Édouard-Victoire-Antoine Lalo or Robert Schumann
Chamber

Students auditioning for Pre-College Chamber will be asked to play the following in addition to their primary instrument repertoire: 

  • Scales: minimum 3 octaves  
  • For string players, if asked, play 3, 6 or 12 in a bow, off the string or detache  
  • For pianists, scales, 4 octaves  
  • For wind players, scales, minimum 3 octaves - if asked, play legato or staccato 
  • Sight reading  
Clarinet

Applicants ages 12-18:

  • Major, minor and chromatic scales 
  • An étude comparable in difficulty to those by Cyrille Rose 
  • One movement or section from a piece comparable in difficulty to the Concerto for Clarinet in A Major, K. 622 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, or Concerto for Clarinet in F Minor, Opus 73 by Carl Maria von Weber 
Composition

Composition applicants must submit the following materials with the online application in order to be considered for an audition. Live auditions for composition applicants will take place in the form of a long form live interview with our composition faculty.  Note: due to the COVID-19 crisis, interviews will be offered virtually.

Applicants ages 12-15: 

  • At least one complete score of at least 2 minutes in length 
  • At least one audio recording of a complete score 
  • One video recording of one piece of the applicant’s choice on an instrument or voice demonstrating technical and musical proficiency 

Applicants ages 16-18: 

  • At least two complete scores of at least 5 minutes in length, with contrasting instrumentation 
  • Audio recordings of complete scores 
  • Video recording of one piece of the applicant’s choice on an instrument or voice demonstrating technical and musical proficiency  
Double Bass

Applicants ages 12-15:  

  • Either one movement of a standard concerto, or two contrasting pieces of “Progressive Repertoire Volume 3, book 6” by George Vance   
  • One orchestral excerpt 
  • One 3 octave major scale and arpeggio, with 2 contrasting styles of bowing  

Applicants ages 16-18:  

  • Either two contrasting movements of a concerto or two contrasting pieces of “Progressive Repertoire Volume 3, book 6” by George Vance      
  • Either an unaccompanied contemporary piece (such as a Rabbath étude from Volume 2) or one movement of a Bach Cello Suite  
  • Two orchestral excerpts of the applicants choosing 
  • One 3 octave major scale with arpeggio 
  • One 3 octave minor scale with arpeggio, with 2 contrasting styles of bowing
Flute

Applicants ages 12-18:

  • Two contrasting pieces of the applicant’s choice 
  • One étude of the applicant’s choice 
  • Two orchestral excerpts of the applicant’s choice 
  • Chromatic scale - three octaves, major scales - two octaves, minor scales (harmonic) - two octaves 
Guitar

Applicants ages 12-18:

  • Prepare two pieces in contrasting styles* 
  • Be prepared to play major scales in keys of the applicant's choice 
  • Be prepared to sight read  

*Prepared pieces should be at least the level of difficulty of those found in the Bridges guitar books, published by Royal Conservatory of Music (any edition), or the Bridges Syllabus, according to the grade the applicant is entering at the time of enrollment, as listed below:  

  • Grades 8: level 3 or above 
  • Grades 9: level 4 or above 
  • Grade 10: level 5 or above 
  • Grade 11: level 6 or above

Horn

Applicants ages 12-18:

Percussion

Applicants ages 12-18:

  • Prepare solos on snare drum (both concert and rudimental styles), mallet instruments (a two-mallet solo, and for high school-aged students a four-mallet solo ), and timpani  
  • Be prepared to perform all major scales (two octaves) and arpeggios on a mallet instrument  
  • Come prepared to demonstrate the ability to tune timpani: matching given pitches and tuning intervals from given pitches. High school-aged students will be asked to sight read on all instruments

  • Applicants will be required to play a scale and arpeggio with hands together 4 octaves.  
  • Applicants will be required to sight read. 

Applicants ages 16-18:  

  • Three contrasting works including: 
    • One fast movement of a classical sonata  
    • One work by Johann Sebastian Bach (excluding the Short Preludes and Inventions 1, 4 and 8)  
    • One contrasting work of the student’s choice. This work should approximate or exceed the level of the following: Impromptus by Franz Schubert or Frédéric Chopin, The Seasons by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Preludes by Claude Debussy, Rhapsodies by Johannes Brahms, etc. 
    • One Sinfonia or a Prelude and Fugue by Johann Sebastian Bach
  • Applicants will be required to play a scale and arpeggio with hands together 4 octaves.  
  • Applicants will be required to sight read.
Trombone and Bass Trombone

Applicants ages 12-18:

  • All major and minor scales and arpeggios (not required on recorded auditions) 
  • Two contrasting technical studies, lyrical and technical, from Vladislav Blazhevich or Marco Bordogni 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of tenor and alto clefs 
  • Solo of applicant's choice
