April 30 Orchestras Concert: Important Information
In order to keep the hall and traffic paths clear, we will be keeping the performance hall clear of instrument cases, coats and other items. We will be providing a green room for students to leave their belongings. The room will be 217. Students should leave coats and cases in this room before going to their dress rehearsal in Kulas. This room will be available from 8:00 am to 1:30 pm to safely secure cases and coats. Audience members will be allowed in the hall 30 minutes prior to the start of the concert, but not during the dress rehearsals.
Dress Rehearsal and Concert Start Time
Dress rehearsals on Dec 12 will be as follows:
8:30-9:10 am Beginning Orchestra Dress Rehearsal
9:25-10:05 am Preparatory Orchestra Dress Rehearsal
10:20-11:00 am Youth String Camerata Dress Rehearsal
11:30 am Concert
Dress for the concerts is white shirt/blouse, dark skirt or dress slacks, black shoes and socks.
The concert should conclude around 1:00 pm.
Video and Audio Recording
We do not allow the use of cameras and recording devices in the hall during the concert. CIM does have a written policy strictly prohibiting the use of cameras and recording devices. In lieu of this policy, CIM will be video-taping the orchestra concert in April. The CD/DVD order form includes this option to purchase a professional DVD recording and will be available on the day of the concert.
If there are any questions, please feel free to contact the Prep office at 216-791-5000.
The Preparatory Orchestra, conducted by Brian Thornton, is the perfect place for intermediate string players looking to develop mature orchestral skills.
The repertoire of Preparatory Orchestra presents exciting technical and musical challenges for the advancing string player. Students in Preparatory Orchestra continue to develop essential orchestral skills while incorporating a wide variety of bowing, fingering and rhythmic patterns and exploring a full palette of musical expression.
Students should be comfortable sight reading and performing music in Major and minor keys up to four sharps or flats and should be adept with beat subdivisions and combinations. Students enrolled in Preparatory Orchestra are expected to participate in their school music programs. The orchestra performs at the end of each semester with the other Preparatory division orchestras.
Preparatory Orchestra Auditions
Auditions are required. Auditions for Preparatory Orchestra will be held on Saturday, May 21, 2016 from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm. THERE WILL BE NO FALL AUDITIONS. Audition requirements are as follows:
- Scales — The student must be prepared to play one 3 octave scale, as well as the conductor’s choice of any two octave major scale from 3 sharps to 3 flats and their parallel minor.
- Solo Piece — Select and prepare a piece that demonstrates a range of techniques (i.e. shifting, spiccato, martele, vibrato). The piece should be performance-ready and agreed upon with the private teacher.
- Sight Reading — A short selection of sight reading (with shifting) will be provided to each student during the audition.

Absence & Tardiness Policies
Students enrolled in Beginning Orchestra are expected to participate in their school music programs. The orchestra performs at the end of each semester with the Preparatory division orchestras.
Tardiness: Latecomers are a disruption to the rehearsal. If a student arrives to a rehearsal after it has begun, they will be tuned outside of the rehearsal area and seated in the back of the section for the duration of the rehearsal.
Excessive tardiness and/or absences may result in a permanent change of seating.
