Young Artist Program
Jump To: Application | Partner Schools | Junior Young Artist Program
Highly gifted musicians make decisions early in life regarding their professional careers. The Young Artist Program at Cleveland Institute of Music provides a musical environment for the serious young musician (grades 11-12) to support the quest for personal and artistic excellence. A rigorous course of music study combined with an equally rigorous academic program provides a solid foundation upon which to make informed career choices.
In a cooperative educational alliance between CIM and an academic school, class schedules are constructed so that a student completes academic course work during the morning hours and in the afternoon the student takes music courses at CIM that include private lessons, music theory, Dalcroze Eurthythmics, studio classes and performance seminar. Young Artists are integrated into important aspects of conservatory training vital to musical development but generally not available until college.
Music Theory and Dalcroze Eurhythmics courses are college level classes for which college credit is earned. Such credit is eligible for transfer to a baccalaureate program. For students who are accepted and choose to matriculate into CIM's Bachelor of Music degree, credit will be given for all coursework completed, but will not be calculated in the baccalaureate GPA. A student in good standing who completes an academic/music track (24 credit hours through YAP) and is accepted into the baccalaureate program at Cleveland Institute of Music, can be considered for Sophomore Standing.
Teachers for students in the Young Artist Program are the distinguished artist faculty of the conservatory.
Credit for applied lessons in the major field of study will be awarded only during a Young Artist's senior year of high school with successful completion of a collegiate level performance jury. If a student is in the program for two years, a Young Artist Diploma is awarded at annual CIM Commencement exercises.
Admission
Arrangements and application for academic program is the responsibility of the student and student's family. Even though a student may be accepted into the Young Artist Program, acceptance into an academic program is required. The Young Artist Program has partnered with both public and private schools for the academic requirement. A list of recommended academic schools is provided below.
