New Music Ensemble Celebrates Composer Joan Tower

November 10  Recital

November 9 Symposium

November 10, the New Music Ensemble, directed by Head of Composition Keith Fitch, celebrates the 75th birthday of one of America's foremost and colorful composers, Joan Tower.

Reviewers say Tower is nearly impossible to pigeonhole stylistically, her numerous works for orchestra and chamber music ensembles are characterized by rhythmic vitality power and often raw emotion. She has been hailed as "one of the most successful woman composers of all time" by The New Yorker magazine.

She'll present a symposium on Saturday, November 9 at 1:30 p.m. in CIM's Studio 113. The discussion of her work and process is followed by a recital the next day.

The recital, presented in celebration of Tower's 75th birthday, will feature six of her works in CIM's Mixon Hall at 4:00 p.m.  The CIM New Music Ensemble, led by Fitch, will be joined by the CIM Percussion Ensemble, led by Paul Yancich. Faculty performers include cellist Sharon Robinson and the Cavani String Quartet.

Both of these New Music Series events are free and open to the public.
