Cleveland Institute of Music and Dominican Republic’s Conservatorio Nacional de Música Launch Groundbreaking New Partnership

Cleveland — The Cleveland Institute of Music and the Conservatorio Nacional de Música of the Dominican Republic, represented by its Ministry of Culture, marked the beginning of a new international partnership Thursday with a signing ceremony and concert celebrating the shared power of music education, artistic collaboration and cultural exchange.

CIM President and CEO Paul Hogle, Executive Vice President and Provost Scott Harrison, Dean Jennifer Call and Distinguished Professor of Piano Antonio Pompa-Baldi joined Roberto Ángel Salcedo, Minister of Culture of the Dominican Republic, and Amaury Sánchez, Vice Minister of Creativity and Artistic Training, for the event.

The new partnership builds on several years of relationship-building, spearheaded by Pompa-Baldi, and includes a CIM faculty delegation to Santo Domingo last spring and Vice Minister Sánchez’s visit to CIM last winter. The collaboration will create new opportunities for faculty development, curriculum building, artistic exchange and student training between the two institutions.

Over the coming years, CIM faculty will work alongside their counterparts at the Conservatorio as it strengthens its academic and artistic capacity and moves toward becoming a degree-granting institution. Together, the institutions will explore curricular partnerships that draw on the distinctive strengths of each school while creating pathways for talented Dominican students to pursue their studies at CIM.

"There is a Dominican saying that captures the spirit of this moment beautifully: 'Quien a buen árbol se arrima, buena sombra le cobija—'He who leans against a good tree is sheltered by good shade." Shared Hogle at the ceremony. "In choosing to walk with the Conservatorio Nacional, we lean into a strong and rooted institution, and together we create shade—opportunity, mentorship, and artistic growth—for talented young musicians on both sides of the Caribbean."

The agreement establishes three areas of cooperation: promoting the exchange of faculty, students, and academic programs between CIM and the Conservatorio; developing joint degree pathways between the schools; and identifying and preparing top students to enroll at CIM. Additionally, the Ministry of Culture and CIM will seek to promote cultural and artistic exchange between the Dominican Republic and Cleveland.

The initiative is led by the Dominican Ministry of Culture with further support from the Fundación Sinfonía, in partnership with the Cleveland Institute of Music. Pompa-Baldi’s participation is supported in part through the U.S. Department of State’s Fulbright Specialist Program.

The signing ceremony concluded with a brief concert, underscoring the partnership’s central purpose: bringing musicians and institutions together through the shared language of music.

Cleveland — El Cleveland Institute of Music (CIM) y el Conservatorio Nacional de Música de la República Dominicana, representado por el Ministerio de Cultura, marcaron este jueves el inicio de una nueva alianza internacional mediante una ceremonia de firma y un concierto de celebración que destacó el poder de la educación musical, la colaboración artística y el intercambio cultural. 

Participaron en el evento Paul Hogle, presidente y director ejecutivo del CIM; Scott Harrison, vicepresidente ejecutivo y rector; Jennifer Call, decana; y Antonio Pompa-Baldi, profesor distinguido de piano, junto a Roberto Ángel Salcedo, ministro de Cultura de la República Dominicana, y Amaury Sánchez, viceministro de Creatividad y Formación Artística.

La nueva alianza es el resultado de varios años de construcción de relaciones institucionales, impulsadas por Pompa-Baldi, e incluye una delegación de profesores del CIM que visitó Santo Domingo la pasada primavera, así como la visita del viceministro Sánchez al CIM el invierno pasado. La colaboración abrirá nuevas oportunidades para el desarrollo docente, el fortalecimiento curricular, el intercambio artístico y la formación estudiantil entre ambas instituciones.

Durante los próximos años, profesores del CIM trabajarán junto a sus colegas del Conservatorio mientras la institución continúa fortaleciendo sus capacidades académicas y artísticas y avanza hacia su consolidación como institución otorgante de títulos universitarios. Asimismo, ambas instituciones explorarán alianzas curriculares que aprovechen las fortalezas distintivas de cada escuela y creen oportunidades para que estudiantes dominicanos talentosos continúen sus estudios en el CIM.

"Hay un dicho dominicano que refleja perfectamente el espíritu de este momento: 'Quien a buen árbol se arrima, buena sombra le cobija'", expresó Hogle durante la ceremonia. "Al elegir caminar junto al Conservatorio Nacional, nos apoyamos en una institución sólida y profundamente arraigada, y juntos creamos sombra, es decir, oportunidades, mentoría y crecimiento artístico, para jóvenes músicos talentosos a ambos lados del Caribe."

El acuerdo establece tres áreas de cooperación: promover el intercambio de docentes, estudiantes y programas académicos entre el CIM y el Conservatorio; desarrollar programas conjuntos de licenciatura entre ambas instituciones; e identificar y preparar a estudiantes sobresalientes para su futura matrícula en el CIM. Asimismo, el Ministerio de Cultura y el CIM buscarán fomentar el intercambio cultural y artístico entre la República Dominicana y Cleveland.

La iniciativa está liderada por el Ministerio de Cultura de la República Dominicana, con el apoyo adicional de la Fundación Sinfonía, en colaboración con el Cleveland Institute of Music. La participación de Antonio Pompa-Baldi cuenta, además, con apoyo parcial del programa Fulbright Specialist del Departamento de Estado de los Estados Unidos.

La ceremonia concluyó con un breve concierto que subrayó el propósito central de esta alianza: unir a músicos e instituciones a través del lenguaje universal de la música.
