Introduction

Dr. Jack Hughes has a PhD in Music from the University of Chicago and a Bachelor of Music from CIM, where he was the first student to receive the dual degree in music theory, with composition. CIM awarded him the Donald Erb Prize in Composition, the Maurice and Judith Kaplow Prize for Uncommon Creativity, and the Darius Milhaud Award for exceptional creativity, versatility and academic excellence. The American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2020 named Hughes a Charles Ives Scholar.

  • BM in composition and theory, Cleveland Institute of Music (2014); studied with Keith Fitch, Richard Nelson and Timothy Cutler
  • PhD in composition with minor in music theory, University of Chicago (2020); studied with Augusta Read Thomas, Shulamit Ran and Lawrence Zbikowski

Teaching Experience

  • Presented seminars at Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival (NM), Northwestern University (IL), Cleveland Institute of Music, Orford Music Festival (Canada), and Wayne State College (NE) from 2015-2021.
  • Course designer, instructor and teaching assistant in music theory, composition and analysis at University of Chicago from 2016-2020.
