Introduction

Yasuhito Sugiyama began his tenure as principal tuba of The Cleveland Orchestra in January 2006. In a profile of Sugiyama, the Cleveland Plain Dealer said, “His elegant, focused artistry fits beautifully into the orchestra's tradition. He provides a firm foundation for the brass section and projects utmost confidence when the tuba emerges from the sonic fabric.” A native of Hyogo, Japan, Mr. Sugiyama was a member of the Vienna State Opera Orchestra before coming to Cleveland.
