Congratulations to this fall’s Cleveland Institute of Music Concerto Competition winners! The winners are Beatrice Hsieh (violin, Kwuon), Isabelle Durrenberger (violin, Laredo/Cho) and Huibin Zou (clarinet, Cohen).  Daniel Kaler (cello, Kosower) and Rachael Lemna (cello, Kraut) received honorable mentions. The winners have each earned a coveted spot to perform a solo with the Cleveland Institute of Music Orchestra this spring.

Zou was pleased and even a bit surprised to have been chosen a winner. “It’s a great pleasure to be selected as a winner,” he says. “To be honest, I didn’t really think I would win! I just wanted to perform well and present my musical ideas.” Zou performed Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto K. 622, the composer’s last completed solo piece.  “The Mozart Clarinet Concerto is my favorite piece,” he says. “It’s really beautiful and I’m so proud that I have the privilege to perform his last masterwork.”

The competition was judged this year by faculty members Carl Topilow, Joyce Griggs, Stanley Konopka, Dean Southern, Todd Wilson and Anthony Slusser.

Congratulations to all the winners!
