About

“Ein Heldenleben: Hero or Non-Hero?”

Strauss’ sketchbooks suggest that Ein Heldenleben and its lampoon, Don Quixote, were thought of, more or less, simultaneously. Indeed, he always programmed the two tone poems as a pair and suggested that other conductors do so as well. What does this fact say to those who view Ein Heldenleben as a work of hubris and egotism?
