CIM provides flute students with an intensive education in one of the country's finest educational settings, University Circle, approximately four miles east of downtown Cleveland. CIM's location places it adjacent to Case Western Reserve University and just a five-minute walk from Severance Hall, home of The Cleveland Orchestra. Other important institutions within easy walking distance are The Cleveland Museum of Art, the Cleveland Art Institute, the Museum of Natural History, the Western Reserve Historical Society, Crawford Auto-Aviation Museum, and the Cleveland Botanical Garden. It is a wonderfully stimulating environment!

With enrollment restricted to eight, every flute student is assured extensive performance experience. Chamber ensembles meet regularly, and CIM's two symphony orchestras perform approximately 22 concerts throughout the year. On a regular basis, students not only hear Cleveland Orchestra subscription concerts, but also have the marvelous educational opportunity of observing those CO rehearsals published as "open." In addition, students may be involved in wind ensemble, contemporary music, and (through our relationship with Case Western Reserve University), jazz ensembles and early music.

CIM's cutting-edge Distance Learning capabilities allow for direct-stream master classes with teachers from around the world, and flutists who visit Cleveland are invited to give classes while they're in town. In recent years, visiting artist-teachers have included Emmanuel Pahud, Sophie Cherrier, Carol Wincenc, Robert Langevin, Jeffrey Khaner, Robert Dick, Gary Shocker and Michel Debost. Regular studio classes, offered by Department Chair Joshua Smith and Cleveland Orchestra colleague Mary Kay Fink, occur throughout the year, as well. Of course, the musical life of a CIM flutist is not confined to the academic year, and students participate in summer festivals, including Tanglewood, Aspen, The National Orchestral Institute, The National Repertory Orchestra, The Music Academy of the West, Round Top and The Kent/Blossom Music Festival.

The combination of CIM's excellent and highly motivated students, strong curriculum, and professional faculty is one that produces results. Alumni now occupy positions in ensembles such as The Cleveland Orchestra, The Boston Symphony, Chicago Lyric Opera, The Israel Philharmonic, and The Los Angeles Philharmonic. Some also have been prize winners in the NFA Young Artist and Piccolo Artist Competitions.
